Russian Newspapers and Journals on Islam
The “Universal Database of Russian Islamic Studies” offers access to topical Russian newpspapers and academic journals on Islam. The collection is available free of charge in Germany and in German resarch institutions abroad via national licence.
The database allows full-text search and browsing through the volumes. Selected pages may be downloaded in PDF-format.
Russia and Islam
Almost ten percent of the Russian population are Muslim. In addition to the majority of Orthodox Christians, Muslims are the second largest religious community in Russia. Accordingly, Russia also has a lively media and research landscape with various newspapers and specialist journals on Islam and Islamic life in Russia.
A selection of ten particularly important periodicals is available free of charge throughout Germany via the “Universal Database of Russian Islamic Studies“. The database was jointly licensed by the specialized information services Russian, East and Southeast European Studies as well as Middle East, North Africa and Islamic Studies with the support of the German Research Foundation.
The database offers researchers working on Muslims and Islam in Russia, the Caucasus and Central Asia easy access to highly topical scientific publications and journalistic content, previously difficult to access in Germany, via a convenient web portal. The content of the database dates back to 2007 and is continually updated with the latest articles by the providing company “East View Information Services”.

With a press run of 10.000 copies it is a widely distributed specialist journal for the researchers of Islam and Islamic Studies. Its authors include the leading Islamic scholars, political and religious figures of Russia, as well as foreign experts on the subject.

The journal “Islam in the Countries of the Commonwealth of Independent States” is devoted to a wide range of problems of the CIS countries, including international relations, political science, religious studies, sociology, history, cultural studies, philology, economics and finance, Islamic studies, law, and more. Geographically, the authors focus on the study of Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan.

Islamskii vestnik (The Islamic Herald) is a newspaper published in the city of Makhachkala, Dagestan, North Caucasus. It comes out on a bi-weekly basis and covers not only the issues pertaining to Islam and Muslim studies, but also important political and economic events inside Dagestan, relations between this republic and the neighboring Ingushetiia and Chechnya. The archive goes back to 2010.

Modes of Access
University members may use the exisiting institutional access. This allows for an easy access without a separate login at most German universities and research institutions. Please inquire about possibilities of external access beyond the campus network (e.g. through VPN) at your home insitution.
Interested parties without institutional access may register for a private login, under the condition of being a permanent resident of Germany. They will receive their login information via mail after registration.
