Full-time vacancy for sencior academic position in the field of Politics, Culture and Society of the Contemporary Middle East

At the KU Leuven Faculty of Arts there is a vacant, full-time sencior academic position in the field of Politics, Culture and Society of the Contemporary Middle East.

Duties

Research

Included in the assignments of the appointed candidate are the development of a research programme, the pursuit of excellence in scientific research results of an international level and the support and promotion of national and international collaborative relations in the field of research of politics, culture and society in the contemporary Middle East.

Teaching

The candidate must be prepared to provide instruction in the field of politics, culture and society in the contemporary Middle East and the language acquisition of Modern Standard Arabic at all levels of the teaching programme. The appointed candidate will contribute to the supervising of students in their bachelor and master paper research. In addition the candidate will contribute to the organisation of the internship programme. Teaching will take 40% of the candidate’s workschedule. The candidate is prepared to teach at all levels of the bachelor and master teaching programme. The teaching assignment takes place at the Leuven faculty campus. The candidate is prepared to accept teaching assignments in other campuses of the faculty if so required in the future. The instruction must be in keeping with the education vision of the KU Leuven. Commitment to the quality of the study programme as a whole is considered to be self-evident.

Service

The candidate is expected to engage in scientific and social service assignments and to be willing to engage in internal tasks and to participate in administrative duties.

Also, it is expected that the candidate on the basis of his or her expertise actively participate in the ongoing societal discussion on the Arab world and on Islam.

Requirements

The candidate must have a PhD degree in Arabic and Islamic Studies or an equivalent thereof.

It is expected that the candidate has an excellent research portfolio in the field of the politics, culture and society of the contemporary Middle East.The quality of the research performed must be demonstrable from publications in international journals. International research experience is a plus.

The candidate is prepared to share in language instruction in consultation with the other members of the teaching staff and is able to introduce the students through critical reading to primary MSA sources in different genres and this in accordance with the research interests of the candidate. The candidate is prepared to collaborate with the teachers to achieve a balanced study programme that reflects the expertise of the members of Arabic and Islamic Studies and the candidate’s contribution in the field of the politics, culture and society of the contemporary Middle East. The research group Arabic and Islamic Studies promotes teamwork and an empathic attitude towards our students.

The candidate has an international network. International expertise in student instruction is an asset.

The candidate can show leadership skills. Management experience is an asset.

The candidates are requested to add a short introduction to their planned research activities (max 2 pages) and a vision text about education (max 2 pages) for the application.

Proficiency in English is required.

The official administrative language used at KU Leuven is Dutch. If you do not speak Dutch (or do not speak it well) at the start of employment, KU Leuven will provide language training to enable you to take part in administrative meetings.

Before teaching courses in Dutch or English, you will be given the opportunity to learn Dutch, respectively English, to the required standard.
