The study of the Oriental Christianity deals with the diverse forms of Christianity in the Orient from its beginnings to the present day. The area to be covered extends geographically from the Caucasus (Armenia and Georgia) via the Middle East to north-east Africa (Egypt, Sudan and Ethiopia) as well as to Central and East Asia (along the Silk Road) and India. On the eve of Islam, the Orient and North Africa were almost completely Christianised.
The emergence of Islam is unimaginable without Oriental Christianity. Even the transmission of ancient culture and science to the empire of the caliphs is a Christian legacy. Oriens Christianus encompasses a multitude of languages (Armenian, Georgian, Christian Arabic, Syriac, Coptic, Nubian, Ethiopian) and literatures.
